RCPI’s Archive Collections

We were founded in 1654 by Dr John Stearne, to improve standards in the medical profession and in medical educations. Since our foundation we have collected archive material relating to the history of the College, as well as collecting papers relating to the history of medicine in Ireland more generally.

The online catalogue

During 2010 and 2011 we completed a Wellcome Trust funded project to electronically catalogue the archive collection, and this online catalogue is the result of the project. Our archive is still growing, and as donations are made to the archive they are also added to the online catalogue.

What’s in the archive?

The archive collection contains material from two main sources:

  • The records of RCPI from 1667 to the present, including minute books, correspondence, administrative records and College registers.
  • Records created by others and donated to us for safe-keeping. These include papers of individual physicians, hospitals, medical and professional organisations, the papers of Irish medical historians, papers relating to the social history of medicine, and medical businesses.
